Don't wait for bookings.

I have been shooting weddings for just over a year now, and its been a massive learning curve. Unlike most people who go into wedding photography I jumped straight in and went solo. I did not spend months, years as a 2nd photographer, not that I didn't try. I found that every established photographer wouldn't even reply, and the ones that did I found arrogant with the response. So I had no option but to jump head first and go for it. I spent hours researching other peoples work and jotting down what sort of shots I like and how to build and do them differently. Spent weeks looking at albums, usb options, different web hosting. You do find yourself looking at what other wedding photographers use and wanting to do it there way but the truth is if you have something you like, your clients like then why change firms? Adapt, contact suppliers if you want adjustments and see what they can offer. You build a great relationship with the supplier. The wedding album supplier I use are  MtaUk

Webhosting was also a massive headache. There are soooo many options, most have a month or so free so try as many out as possible without adding your domain and feel what works well for yours. I now use two. one for my clients view and shop and one as my main site with a link that takes you to my other without looking like its another website. My main website is hosted my squarespace. Probably one of the best at the moment. Support is quick and its really easy to use with loads of type of page options. The client area is shoot proof. Again its easy to use and you can add different printers to your shop with there prices. You can add music, slide shows. I pay no more than 20  a month for both of them.

The hardest part so far is keeping focused and not being complacent. Don't let the work come to you! go out looking for it, chase up every lead, reply yo every email as quick as possible. Try and plan a hour everyday doing just this. Plan a strategy on how you will get bookings. Wedding fares, flyers, local adds, Try each out and see what works for you. monitor results  of each campaign. Facebook is becoming the largest advertiser on the planet, so use it. Share your posts in local Facebook pages, groups. Try as much as possible, just don't expect work to appear in your inbox.

Another piece of good advice is to give yourself personal goals for your business. What do you want from the business? I have a full time job and the photography is a side line (at the moment) so my goals for the business are to keep building bookings and client list, help other photographers as much as I can, what others avenues can I sell my self as a photographer and to be recognised as being a good photographer. I gave myself these targets in April and already I am seeing those goals happen. My bookings are improving with kids portraits and more weddings, I have helped 3 photographers make that leap and offer as much support as possible to anyone you contacts me. I have started to sell prints from my client area and I have been nominated for Welsh Photographer of the year by clients. I have also been approached by local press to submit weddings monthly to appear in the paper and online, and also approached by county wedding magazine for one of my weddings to be featured in wedding of the year in the magazine. 

So my main advice to all, is to list your goals and make them happen.
